All I Want for Xmas Is…

The weather outside is rarely frightful here in Los Angeles, this week being an exception, and we don’t typically need delightful fires because there’s never any snow.  The holidays are upon us and with them comes a time of reflection, thinking about what we have in our lives and all that took place within this past year.  For many of us it is a time to visit our loved ones and head back to our childhood homes while for some it’s a time to eat Chinese take out while watching the Christmas Story marathon on TBS.  I took the time to speak with my fellow colleagues here at Zoic to find out what was on their holiday wish list this year and here is what some of them had to say… Read the rest of this entry »

Where would you spend 91 days?

I love traveling. So much so that I have been to a different city every month this year with the exception of this one. I always had this secret fantasy that someone over at the Travel Channel would discover me and I would become the next Samantha Brown, gallivanting all over the world, staying in posh hotels and eating at the best restaurants in a new city each week. This past January I got to experience living in a completely new place when I traveled to Alaska to produce a documentary project. I was there for three months, and being there for that amount of time really made me feel like I was a part of the community, I became ingrained into the lives of many amazing people.

A couple weeks ago I caught wind, via Twitter, about two men who are traveling the world who are trying to answer the question: What would you do if you could only spend ninety-one days in one place? Read the rest of this entry »

Behind the Scenes: Famous Footwear “Frozen Moments”

A few blog posts ago, I shared with you Director of Photography Vincent Laforet’s post on his experience on the set of the Famous Footwear commercial spot, “Frozen Moments.” Included was a behind the scenes short that was shot and edited by Chris Dowsett. I’m no DP, but I put together my own behind the scenes short video. Shot with my FlipCam and edited on Final Cut Pro 7 (with assistance from editor Alison Veneto-Grady), here is my version of what being behind the scenes was like up in Fort Langley, Canada (one hour outside of Vancouver).

The crew turned a small suburban Canadian neighborhood in the middle of summer into a winter wonderland. The shoot was done at night and though I was up for 24 straight hours, I haven’t had that much fun on a set in quite some time. Behind the scenes I interviewed the people in the neighborhood of where the spot was being shot, a slew of different crew members as well as Terence Reilly, VP of Marketing for Famous Footwear.

Check out the video below:

and of course here is the original 60 second spot:

Zoic Studios expands!

It’s an exciting time for Zoic Studios. In January 2006 Zoic Studios opened offices in Vancouver, Canada. Now almost five years later the studio has just expanded to a bigger, brighter loft space in the historic Gastown district.

December Playlist of the Month: From the Man Who Invented the Term Grunge!

The playlist below is from Creative Director of Digital Strategy, Jeff Suhy. I was really excited to get this from Jeff as he once worked in the music industry as VP of A&R for A&M Records. Jeff is still pretty plugged into the music and is clearly passionate about music. Oh and the claim that Jeff coined the term “Grunge,” is completely true and will be explained in a future post!

I’m checking in. Location based check ins are the next big thing, but is it worth your time?

As most of you know by reading this Blog, I love social media. I use Facebook and Twitter definitely more than the average user and I spend parts of my day connecting to people I would never have an opportunity to connect to in the real life. However, even I have to admit that I have trouble completely engaging in one social media platform, Foursquare. For those unaware, Foursquare is a location-based program that tells the world where you are at any given moment in time. There is something that makes me feel slightly creeped out when I “check in” to Virgin America at LAX suddenly letting the world know, “I’m now headed out of the city I live in for a week.” I feel like I am giving permission to a burglar to ransack my house or a stalker to let them know where I will be at any givenmoment so they can attack me. I know that is extreme, but I definitely have a hard time wrapping my head around checking in and why I would want to. Read the rest of this entry »
