Zoic Studios recently had the opportunity to work with Yahoo! to create a series of online search spots called “Super Wow” Miles Dinsmoor, Executive Director of Design at Zoic Studios talks about what it was like to work on these spots:
Goodby, Silverstein & Partners approached Zoic Studios with a great idea to promote Yahoo!’s new web search functionality called the “Super-Wow” by creating a series of spots built around specific searches. In broad strokes the idea is this: We open on the Yahoo! homepage and type in a term in the search bar. Suddenly, the page comes to life. We pull back and find the page on one side of a Cube, which constantly spins to reveal all the different forms of related content available to you at your fingertips – videos, pictures, articles, etc — all on different sides of the cube.
Four major spots were produced in all:
Election News
Space Shuttle
Tron: Legacy
Band of Horses
Each spot had a 0:15 and a 0:30 second version. Zoic built custom environments for the cube to live within based on the content being featured. “Election News” took place on a debate stage. “Space Shuttle” started on the launch pad and took us into space. “Tron” took us into the world of the film and “Band of Horses” has the cube pulsing to the beat onstage at a club.
Although each spot is traditional in terms of format and length, as per the “new media” paradigm, several versions were created to find their audience in all sorts of venues. The primary outlet for each spot was online, but versions were also created for Airlines, Fitness TV, and Cinema. “Tron” was the only spot found it’s way to traditional broadcast TV.
I thought the spots are incredibly cool and sleek looking, but don’t take my word for it. You can check out one of the spots below!
