FRINGE Gets Saved!

Many of you may not watch the show Fringe and for that I am deeply sorry. I’ve been a fan since the beginning, quite honestly because I will watch anything with Joshua Jackson in it (Dawson’s Creek anyone?) However, what kept me watching was the show was well written, the characters well developed and the shows leads captivate me every time I watch. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Survive SXSW

From March 11-21 thousands of people descended on Austin, Texas for the film, music and interactive festival called SXSW. What first began in 1987 as a way for musical acts to be seen by music labels has become an event that has bridged the gap between music, film and technology. At the time, only one hundred and fifty people were expected to attend. However, seven hundred people showed up and from that point forward the festival soon became nationally recognized as a premiere event generating over one hundred million dollars in revenue for the city of Austin. I was able to attend the first part of the festival this year and I learned a thing or two about what it takes to get the most out of your SXSW experience. It’s difficult to articulate why you like certain types of music, obviously, but with that qualification out of the way I would say that I guess I developed a taste for indie rock during my college years and never really grew out of it. Bands like the Pixies, Pavement, Husker Du, and The Minutemen always held such a strong attraction for me – their lyrics, style of singing, even the way they played their instruments seemed so much more intimate that what was being played on the radio at the time. The love of writing and performing music, the authenticity of it, shined through, and the raw need – to just put lyrics on paper, to just pick up an instrument and play – seemed stronger for them than satisfying any critical or commercial interest. This year’s Superbowl commercials

Dan Sarto of AWN.com said it best regarding this year’s Superbowl commercials, “I am not impressed.” I too was not a fan of this year’s crop of commercials and had wished that we had taped the Superbowl so that we could have hit fast forward on the DVR to escape having to watch them. Most years I look forward to checking out the commercials and it is usually a highlight especially if the game, like this year’s first half, is boring. I would agree with Sardo on his assessment and check out his article below to see if you agree.
Sorry State of the Superbowl
